There are 30,000 Democrats in Dorchester County, SC

In March, the US Census Bureau released county-level populations estimates that show Dorchester County, SC now has a total population of nearly 180,000 (178,397 to be exact).

Given our rapid population growth, I estimate there are now roughly 30,000 Democratic voters in Dorchester County. Here’s how I arrived at that estimate:

  • Approximately 70% of the US Population is voting age. So, if we have a total population of roughly 180,000 people in Dorchester County, the voting age population is roughly 126,000 (180,000 * 70%).
  • Only 60% of the voting age population actually votes, so of the 126,000 Dorchester County citizens who are voting age, only about 75,000 of them vote (126,000 * 60%)
  • Approximately 42% of Dorchester County voters voted for Kamala Harris during the 2024 Presidential Election. Since voters don’t register by party in South Carolina, that 42% represents our best estimate of the percentage of Dorchester County voters who are Democrats. Therefore, of our 75,000 total voters, roughly 30,000 (31,500 to be precise) are Democrats.

Imagine what we could accomplish if even 10% of these Democrats — 3,000 people — actively engage in the work of our Party? Imagine how we might improve education, healthcare, housing, infrastructure, and justice if we had 3,000 Dorchester Democrats …

  • Actively engaged in precinct groups
  • Showing up at town council, school board, and county council meetings
  • Volunteering to help get out the vote
  • Donating even $5/Mo. to help fund the work of the Party

When asked to give the invocation at the 2025 Dorchester County Democratic Party Convention, Reverend Felder led us in singing that old Diana Ross song that says: “Reach out and touch somebody’s hand. Make this world a better place if you can.”

When we reach out to our fellow Democrats in Dorchester County, it’s great to know that there are so many of them. If we join hands and work together, we can certainly make Dorchester County and the State of South Carolina a MUCH better place.
